Philosophy/Bio

Computer-based production can be great, but in the wrong hands it can be amateurish. I understand a solid background in tried and true audio principles is necessary to make great records. In my hands, Pro Tools reaches its full potential, as a complement to using great mics, pro outboard gear and talented musicians. Oh yeah, and the vintage Neve console at Faultline Studios, where I work.

My name is Joe Kay and I have an extensive resume as a producer, songwriter and engineer. I studied at San Francisco State University in the Music/Recording Industry program for 3 years and have been a Pro Tools power user for over 9 years. I've also gigged with and recorded with many musicians over the years, so I know what it's like to be on both sides of the glass. Recently I've become a Digidesign Pro Tools Certified Expert in Music-one in a short list of folks who have completed the challenging curriculum and real-world testing gauntlet.

I just want to make great music, in any genre, so let me say that technology will always come second for me. I don't really care about making microphones out of spare telephone parts or whatever. Plenty of engineers out there for that if that's what you need.

The Bay Area has some amazing bands and artists. It's my goal to introduce as many of them as possible to the rest of the world.
